The pestle and the mortar, two kitchen tools used in Liguria to make the pesto, the famous basil sauce, are part of the best food traditions of this part of Italy. To celebrate and promote this traditional kitchen preparation ADI Liguria, the local branch of ADI, launch an international competition for a new design of these tools, with the endorsement by regione liguria and the Architecture Sciences Dept. of the Genoa University.

“The objects are very ancient”, they say at ADI Liguria, “and were constructed with ancient materials: marble and wood. In this respect, candidates are asked to reinterpret the design taking in due consideration tradition, but are also free to propose solutions that can adjust to the change in customs and cooking.”
Therefore, participants may use, if they so wish, also technological solutions, as long as they use food-compatible materials and/or inventions that are suitably economic for use. Models and/or prototypes that may physically depict the products are also welcome.

“Proposals presented “, add the promoters, ” must consider the organoleptic values that make this famous green sauce what it is. The various proposals submitted must consider the specific characteristics of flavour, colour and aroma that must remain unaltered, imagining the production of the sauce with the new design”.

All Italian and foreign designers can join the competition: whether designers, architects or engineers, independent or part of a company.
